Feb/Mar 2015 Update: OneDrive for Business Error "Incompatible Office products are installed on your machine."

After Installing the Feb 2015 Updates for Office 2013 ProPlus via ClicktoRun, OneDrive no longer opens with the error message:

"Sorry, we cant perform this action. Incompatible Office products are installed on your machine. If you have an administrator, please contact them for help. "

I have other office products on here including:

SharePoint Designer 2010

SharePoint Designer 2013

Microsoft PowerBI Designer Preview

and this is installed on Win 8.1 Enterprise

Kind of stumped what is causing this... I see KB2920798  mentions this error message is now added when cant open a document due to a mix of click-to-run and MSI install for office.  I only have click to run for Office 2013 and the MSIs are only for addons in excel (power query) and the additional Microsoft Software...

Anyone have ideas what is causing this and how to resolve?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just finished applying March 2015 C2R updated on Office and the same issue recurred.  This time I simply rebooted and it resolved.  My best guess is it has something to do with a locked file that can't be updated but the Office Update installer doesn't prompt to reboot.

I uninstalled SharePoint Designer 2010 and rebooted and it now works...

Request can be closed.

A reboot resolved it for me.

I think the right answer was from Daragh although I didn't get it at first. I tried to check against windows updates for further updates to fix it but none worked. Then I did this and it fixed the problem:

  • Start an Office 2013 application, such as Microsoft Word 2013.
  • On the File menu, click Account.
  • For Office 2013 Click-to-Run installations, an Update Options item is displayed. Select the Update Now option.
  • Wait for it to finish
  • Done - Hope it helps

I don't have any other versions of anything sharepoint, office msi etc. so this was the only way to fix the problem. I had these in the past but I've removed them although I suspect that residue files may have cause the problem to begin with. Irrelevant though.

I encountered this problem for the first time today, which wasn't resolved by either installing Windows Updates (to Windows 7 Home Premium) or by a full reboot. I don't know why I had to update my Office 365 manually given I have automatic updates enabled in my Office 365 account, but this solution has solved the problem for me - thanks!

We fixed by clearing the document cache. No updates were uninstalled.

I agree with your proposed cause.  I'm starting to see a number of users with what should be only the MSI version installed, but the users that are experiencing the error were ones that I used the "Sync" feature in Office 365 to help them setup OneDrive for Business.  We also had an issue where users may have installed Lync view the Office 365 software section of their profiles, so thats another place they may have used C2R to co-exist on a PC with the MSI version.

I totally agree that this "feature" shouldn't be doing this and MS should have prevented the install of C2R if it detected the MSI version was already present.  What a mess!

Restarting only temporarily solves the problem. A week later and the problem came back. Not sure if another silent update was pushed out that triggered it again.

For me, I can't access office documents from a folder share on our 2010 Sharepoint server. If I copy the file locally, it will open.

My Fix: I ran the File -> Accounts -> Updates (There were pending updates that it didn't tell me about). I let it kill all office apps and install. Came back and I was able to open files off the network again without a reboot.

Thanks to everyone else for posting problems/solutions.

I don't get it.

I'm experiencing almost the same problem. It started today with the error message appearing when I try to save a document to OneDrive.

Not only does the error message appear, once it goes away it presents the File Save dialog again but does not all me to save my document.

This does appear to be OneDrive related because I can save the same document to another Cloud store without getting the error message.

...and I don't have OneDrive for Business installed or SharePoint Designer; however I continually get sync problems with OneDrive.

Uninstalling the stand alone OneDrive for Business client solved the issue for me.

Apparently there is a OneDrive for Business client build into Office 365, therefore installing the stand alone client causes the error.

Uninstalling SharePoint Designer 2013 seems to have worked for me.  I realize that's not an option for many, but I didn't need the software anyways.

We're now seeing this issue across many MSI based installations on our domain, users do not have any C2R installations and it seems to have started since this months office updates...

Had this issue here, reboot did not resolve it.  Applied KB3054925 and KB3054939, after that reboot the problem was fixed.
